When you sign up to race at Sagebrush Safari you have the option to add on a few things and we recommend you do! One of those things is camping on site. The camping is cheap and located just a few seconds from the starting line. The team is there to welcome you after noon on Friday and you have the option to spend up to two nights ( Friday/Saturday) for $30/one night or $40/two nights. This is such a great deal, and so convenient to be there bright and early on race day!
We got there on Friday about 1:00 pm. The RV lot was empty so the guys said to pick a good spot and set up camp. The spots are not marked and there is no real rhyme or reason to the set up since there are no hook ups. So we picked a spot next to some shady trees and got set up for the weekend.
We camp in a 30 foot toy hauler and there was plenty of space for our rig. By the end of the weekend there were about 12 RV's in the lot. None of them too close together, we all had plenty of space to roam. There are other locations to camp just down the road, along with a tent/car camping lot too. The tent and car camping lot had the most vehicles in it from what I could see.
My favorite part about camping on site is how the children from every site played together. They all shared snacks, toys, bikes, and played games endlessly. The bike community is so genuinely filled with good people that it was easy to relax and watch all our kids play together in the tall grass. We will do this again next year for sure!
The weekend at Sagebrush Safari
Our kids explored all over the event space. There was a swing, rocks, trails, and lots of dirt and tall grass to play in. They were extremely fond of the giant rock near the starting line. This rock quickly became the hot spot for everyone that was 12 and under. The kids were swinging from the trees, jumping from the rock, and playing in its shade. It was the perfect place for them in the heat.
Friday night a few more campers showed up but the majority of the campers came on Saturday. Before the Fundo race and pasta dinner, which are more of those add ons I was talking about earlier. The fundo race was at 4:30 (cost $25) and it included a pasta dinner! The pasta dinner was severed hot and with a smile at 6:00. If you wanted to partake in the pasta dinner without doing the fundo race, the price was cheap and the food was great! They served up Spaghetti with meat sauce, salad with lots of toppings available, cookies, garlic bread, corn bread muffins, and more. After dinner they started the fire pits up and everyone sat around the fire. Our friends pulled in just after 7 and we got to catch up with them over at our camping spots while they got their camp ready!
Sunday was race day! We woke up around 6:30 and started coffee and breakfast. Since Kevin wasn't racing we came up with a plan for photos, the kids race, and feeding his friends up at four corners. Kevin never gets to participate in that aspect so it was an extra special race day for that reason. Before that we shared coffee with our neighbors (Hi Ed) and packed up the coolers with water, snacks, and ice. We went down to the starting line to cheer on the riders and take photos. I snuck away while Kevin watched the kids at the start to take some photos down the road a bit. While I was there the e-bikers started their race and I was there to capture a few images. I accidentally caught a rider crash about 30 seconds into his ride. Such a bummer to see a rider go down, especially so early in the race. He was okay and tried to get back on his bike but the pedal was broken and he couldn't continue. After that was cleared up the second wave of riders came through. I got some images of them (see the link here for those images) and went back to see the boys do the kids race!
Quick N' Dirty is so great at putting on the kids races! They really consider all the aspects that make for a good race. These kids get the royal treatment. They have a guide that they follow through the course, the course is marked very well, they have number plates, awards, and they get their very own award ceremony on the podiums! It's such a great way to get the kids into the sport. They have a few categories for the kids to choose from:
The course is roughly 1-3 miles around the campground/venue area
All kids classes are for kids 11 years old and younger. The classes are as follows:
-
KIDS BOY/GIRL BEGINNER: 1 year or less of racing/riding on the dirt. (1 mile)
-
KIDS BOY/GIRL SPORT: 1 to 2 years of racing/riding dirt. (2 miles)
-
KIDS BOY/GIRL EXPERT: 2+ years of racing/riding dirt. (3 miles)
After the kids race pretty much every kiddo was congratulated with ice cream. The energy was high and they all got endless high-fives.
Following that it was time to load up the van and head up the hill to do some cheering, feeding, and hydrating at four corners. When we arrived the parking lot was half full. There were riders coming up from a climb and headed down hill across four corners toward another intense climb. They were hot and flying so Kevin was offering water bottle splashes to cool down the riders. He was having a blast being the water boy! After we rooted everyone on, we headed back down to the finish line to watch for our buddies. The Quick N' Dirty team was passing out cold towels for the riders and there was plenty of shade to share as we cheered on the finishers of the races. After we were done hooting and hollering at all the riders we packed up camp and headed home around 3:15 pm. It was an awesome day, and we already want to go back!
