Race Day Recap for Over The Hump

Over The Hump was easily one of the most family friendly events we've attended. It was also the very first race we attended after Kevin decided to get back into the cycling scene. We showed up early, excited, and semi prepared for the first one. Kevin was wearing a tank top for the race ( he wasn't fully prepared with a kit and such yet. Truthfully we didn't know if we were going to stick with it or not and kits are expensive!) Following the tank top race he earned the leaders jersey so that's pretty rad!  I will breakdown the food, the bathrooms, the fun, the merch, and the kid friendly activities below, thanks for being here.

Fun for kids at Over The Hump

Right when you pull into the Lake Irvine race location you see the dual slalom course on the left and a huge grassy hill on the right. That hill is covered in soft grass with big trees for shade, and it became our base camp for most of the day. From there the kids can watch the dual slalom, run around, and still stay cool. There’s also a crosswalk that leads straight to the event tents where they hand out all kinds of goodies: water, hydration drinks, fruit, granola bars, and more. The real bathrooms are up in this area too, which is a major win for moms. I’ll share more about those a little later.

The Over The Hump team does such a great job with the kids races. They offer a few different categories, and it really covers all ages. There’s a toddler and strider race for the little ones on balance bikes that goes right through the main tent area. For the bigger kids, they have a full course set up. I can’t remember the exact distance, but it takes them a few minutes and they get real race numbers, which they absolutely love.

The event has music playing, tons of space to spread out, and plenty of room to set up chairs and watch your racers. The mornings were pretty brisk, but as soon as the sun came over the hills it got hot fast. Grab a shady spot when you arrive, you’ll be thankful by midday.

We usually get there super early so I can still access the van while Kevin is out on the course. I’m constantly loading and unloading bikes, snacks, tissues, and random toys, so easy access is key. If you’re in the same situation, aim to park on the lower side of the lot near the Mazda parking. Bonus tip: if you drive a Mazda, parking is free and they have a special lot for you. Otherwise it’s five dollars.

We always bring craft supplies to make banners, mini monster trucks since there is plenty of dirt, bells to ring during the races, and of course a mountain of snacks.

The food & facilities at OTH

The Over The Hump crew brings in a few different food trucks for each event, and they’ve been solid every time. We went straight for burgers and fries and they were legit, with vegetarian options too, which I appreciated. On one of the hotter days the Kona Shaved Ice truck showed up and that felt like perfect timing. We were melting and those cups of ice saved us.

The vendor booths are fun to wander through. Most of them hand out samples, so we tried protein shakes, hydration drinks, performance fuel, beef jerky, and a bunch of granola bars. We definitely didn’t leave empty-handed. EDGE Nutrition ended up being our favorite. Their race fuel and hydration actually taste good and didn’t upset any stomachs, which is a big win.

There’s a large water station to refill bottles, and after the race they offer beer if that’s your thing. Not really ours, but the vibe was mellow and respectful. We didn’t see anyone get sloppy, just people hanging out and talking about their rides.

Facilities are better than most race setups. There are port-o-potties near the tents, and if you walk up the grassy hill you’ll find the real bathrooms with doors, sinks, and separate sides. Always clean when we’ve been there.

One morning gave us a classic family moment. The boys all needed to go and Kevin was already warming up, so they came into the women’s restroom with me. We each grabbed a stall and then I hear someone yell, “There’s a frog in the toilet!” Turns out there were tiny frogs in almost every one. The boys turned into instant frog rescuers and carried them outside to watch them hop away. Now they don’t call it Over The Hump, they call it the race with the frogs.

Over The hump is a great family friendly race event!

Over The Hump Merch

The merch is amazing! They had a few different options and of which was from straight acres. They also had hats and a few other things. We got a kids shirt for our oldest he was 6 at the time and got a small shirt. It fit him perfectly!  We got a few shirts and hats to make sure we could remember the great times there!
